About this event

About the Science of Happiness Workshop

What if happiness were less about luck and more about skill? That is the idea at the heart of this free, in-person evening workshop at MAKTABI Business Center in Dubai World Trade Centre. Hosted by MAKTABI together with author and speaker Atish Evaristo Andrade, the session looks at how our everyday habits quietly shape the way we feel, and what we can do about it.

Atish is the author of Buddha in a Suit and, perhaps surprisingly, a former geologist. He brings that scientific curiosity to a subject most of us think of as rather vague, presenting happiness as something that can be learned and practised, using science and evolutionary thinking to explain why our minds work the way they do. The organisers describe the tone as conversational and humorous, so expect a relaxed evening rather than a lecture.

What to expect

The workshop explores how stress, emotions, breathing, posture, gratitude, food and daily routines all play a part in our mood. According to the event listing, the session covers:

  • Understanding and managing emotions, rather than being carried along by them
  • The biology of gratitude and why it has such a strong effect on how we feel
  • Using breath and posture to change your energy levels
  • Practical, food-based tips for wellbeing
  • Turning big goals into small, manageable steps
  • Shifting your default emotional state over time

It is a two-hour session, which leaves enough time to take in the ideas, ask questions and chat with other attendees afterwards. Signed copies of Atish’s book are available to buy on the night if you would like one, although this is entirely optional. The listing does not state a price for the book.

Who it is for

This is a lovely choice for anyone who has been feeling stretched, busy or a little flat and wants some practical, science-backed ideas to take home. It suits professionals looking for a midweek reset after work, people interested in personal development and wellbeing, and anyone simply curious about the psychology of happiness. No prior knowledge is needed.

Because it takes place in a business centre in the heart of DWTC, it is also an easy one to fit in straight from the office. We think it would make a nice evening out with a colleague or friend who shares an interest in mindset and wellbeing.

How to attend

Entry is free, but you do need to register in advance through the event’s Luma page. Registration does not require approval, so once you have signed up you are on the list. Use the official link on this page to reserve your place, and keep an eye on your inbox for any updates from the hosts.

Good to know

  • The venue is on the 18th floor of Sheikh Rashid Tower at Dubai World Trade Centre, so allow a few extra minutes to get through the lobby and up to the right floor.
  • No dress code is stated. As a tip, smart casual is always a safe bet for an after-work event in a business centre.
  • As a general tip, bring a notebook or use your phone to jot down any exercises you want to try at home. Small changes are easier to stick with when you write them down.
  • World Trade Centre Metro Station is close by, which makes this an easy evening to reach without driving.
  • Free events in Dubai can fill quickly, so we would suggest registering sooner rather than later.
