About the Figuring Book Club
Few books reward a good conversation quite like Maria Popova’s Figuring. The Dubai Bibliophiles Book Club is meeting at Lila Molino + Cafe in Alserkal Avenue to talk about it, and anyone who has read the book is welcome to join. It is a free, in-person discussion in one of Dubai’s most creative neighbourhoods, which feels like exactly the right setting for a book so full of art, science and big ideas.
About the book
Figuring weaves together lives spanning four centuries, from the astronomer Johannes Kepler to the marine biologist and writer Rachel Carson. Along the way it explores figures including the astronomer Maria Mitchell, the sculptor Harriet Hosmer, the writer Margaret Fuller and the poet Emily Dickinson. Running through it all are themes of love and the search for truth, and the ways in which people’s private lives and public work shape one another.
It is a rich, layered read, and many readers find they get far more from it by talking it through with others. If you have finished it and are still thinking about it, this is your chance.
What to expect
According to the event listing, the evening starts with each attendee sharing their impressions of the book. The host then moderates a set of guided discussion points. That structure is a nice balance: everyone gets a voice early on, and the guided questions help the conversation go deeper than a simple ‘did you like it?’
The session lasts two hours, giving plenty of time for discussion. As a tip, jot down a passage or two that struck you, so you have something specific to share.
Who it is for
The book club is open to anyone who has read Figuring. It suits keen readers, people interested in the history of science, art lovers, poetry fans and anyone who enjoys thoughtful conversation. It is also a lovely way to meet like-minded people if you are new to Dubai or looking to widen your circle beyond work.
How to attend
Entry is free. Register through the official Luma page linked on this listing. Registration does not require approval. You will need to have read the book before coming along. The listing notes that the book is available on Kindle, at Kinokuniya and on Amazon.ae.
