Peacock Alley Afternoon Tea at Waldorf Astoria DIFC is built around a clock. The hotel’s lounge in Dubai International Financial Centre serves its signature Meet Me at the Clock afternoon tea beneath an Art Deco timepiece, a nod to one of New York’s most famous meeting places, and pairs it with savoury plates that go a good deal further than the usual cucumber sandwich. Bookings for November 2026 are open now.
Why a clock? The story behind Peacock Alley
The name and the ritual both come from the original Waldorf-Astoria in New York. Peacock Alley was the grand corridor of that hotel, where fashionable New Yorkers came to see and be seen, and at its heart stood a gilded clock first shown at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. According to Hilton, the hotel group that runs Waldorf Astoria today, the clock was bought after the fair by John Jacob Astor IV for the hotel he was building, and it became such a fixture that “meet me at the clock” turned into a New York catchphrase.
That tradition travelled. Many Waldorf Astoria hotels around the world now have a Peacock Alley and a tribute to the original lobby clock, each with local design worked in. The DIFC version follows the same idea with its own character.
The DIFC clock
The clock at the centre of Peacock Alley DIFC was made by Smith of Derby, the English clockmaker. It is an ornate, Art Deco-inspired piece with an LED-illuminated opal glass dial, and Hilton describes it as blending Art Deco elegance with local symbolism. It anchors the room, and it is the reason the afternoon tea carries the name it does. If you are meeting someone, there is no easier landmark in the hotel.
The Peacock Alley Afternoon Tea menu
The Meet Me at the Clock tea follows the classic three-part structure: savoury bites, scones and sweets, served with a selection of teas. What sets it apart is the savoury course, which reads more like a fine-dining tasting than a picnic plate. Dishes listed for the menu include:
- wild-caught crab with caviar
- crispy pommes mousseline with Umbria black truffle
- smoked salmon roulade with hand-rolled string potatoes
- a free-range foie gras puff
Alongside those come finger sandwiches, warm scones with jam and clotted cream, and seasonal pastries. The menu changes with the seasons, so the exact sweets and savouries on your table in November may differ from the dishes above, and it is worth raising any dietary needs when you book.
When it is served
The daily afternoon tea is listed from Sunday to Friday, 2pm to 6pm, which makes it as easy to fit into a long lunch break in DIFC as into a slow weekend afternoon. Saturdays have been given over to special editions with live performance. Peacock Alley has announced both a ballet edition and an opera edition of Meet Me at the Clock in the past, running in the 3pm to 6pm slot, so check which, if any, is running on the Saturday you have in mind before you book. The listing for this booking covers the signature tea.
Who it suits
This is a tea for occasions: birthdays, catch-ups with visiting family, a celebration after a big week at work, or an elegant first stop on a day out in DIFC. The savoury course gives it more substance than a sweets-heavy tea, so it suits people who would rather eat crab and truffle than a third cake. With the lounge in the middle of the financial district, it also works as a business-friendly alternative to lunch for clients who would appreciate the setting.
Fans of hotel history will get the most out of it. Ask staff about the clock, then look at it closely: Smith of Derby has been making clocks for well over a century, and the craftsmanship is the point.
