La Perle by Dragone is Dubai’s resident aqua theatre show at Al Habtoor City, a 90-minute production of acrobatics, aerial stunts and dance staged on a floor that turns into a pool in front of your eyes. It has been running since 2017, and it remains one of the most distinctive evenings out in the city, partly because nothing else in the UAE is built quite like it.
Platinumlist describes it as the only permanent show of its kind in the country, and the cast of 65 performers from 20 countries gives it a genuinely international feel.
The story behind the spectacle
At its heart, La Perle follows a young girl on a journey through Dubai as she searches for a lost pearl. Along the way she moves through a mystical world of supernatural creatures, and the scenes draw on the city’s heritage and folklore, from its pearl-diving past to its modern skyline.
The plot is light and dreamlike rather than something you need to follow closely. It mainly gives shape to a series of big set pieces: acrobats working above and around the water, aerialists spinning high above the stage, and dancers moving across a floor that is dry one minute and flooded the next.
Franco Dragone and the aqua theatre
The show was created by Franco Dragone, the Italian-born Belgian director who shaped many of Cirque du Soleil’s best-known productions, including Mystère, Alegría, Quidam and the water show O in Las Vegas. He went on to make Le Rêve at Wynn Las Vegas and The House of Dancing Water in Macau before La Perle opened in Dubai. Dragone died in 2022, and La Perle is one of his signature works.
The theatre itself is a big part of the appeal. It was purpose-built for the show at Al Habtoor City, with seating that wraps around the stage in a 270-degree arc. When the show launched, Gulf News reported that the stage could be flooded with 2.7 million litres of water in 90 seconds and drained in under a minute, with the auditorium seating around 1,300 people. That transformation is what makes the stunts possible, and watching the stage change is half the fun.
The name is a nod to the city’s past, too. Before oil, pearl diving was central to life along the Gulf coast, and Dubai’s divers would spend months at sea each season. La Perle borrows that image of the precious pearl as the thread running through its story, then gives it a fantastical, modern twist.
Choosing your seats
Seating is split into Silver, Gold, Platinum and VIP sections. Because the rows curve around the stage, you get a good sense of the action from most places, but the show’s own FAQ recommends Gold or Platinum seats as the best views. If you are sitting close, expect to feel very near the water; further back, you take in more of the aerial work and the full scale of the set.
Who it suits
La Perle is pitched as family-friendly, and its mix of circus, water and music works across ages and languages, since it relies on movement and visuals rather than dialogue.
- Families: the show is not suitable for children under two, and children aged 2 to 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Visitors to Dubai: it is a strong choice if you want a big, polished production that feels tied to the city’s own story.
- Couples and groups: a 90-minute evening show that pairs easily with dinner in the Al Habtoor City hotels or along Business Bay.
- Fans of Cirque-style shows: anyone who has enjoyed Dragone’s work elsewhere will recognise his style here.
