عن الفعالية

The Big Wooden Whoopsie is a new comedy written and produced in Dubai, playing a three-night world premiere run at The Junction in Alserkal Avenue. It picks up the Trojan War on day 3,650, deep into a ten-year siege, when everyone involved is bored, distracted and badly in need of a way out.

You already know how it ends. The Greeks build a giant wooden horse, the Trojans wheel it inside, and the city falls. The joke of this show is everything that happens around that moment, and how a war that by the show’s reckoning should have taken three days managed to stretch to ten years and finish with one very questionable piece of carpentry. As the publicity line puts it, comedy is just tragedy plus time, and it has been 3,000 years.

The Trojan War as an office that never closes

The show reimagines the end of the siege as absurd workplace comedy. Ten years in, the war has become a job nobody can leave, staffed by people who have long since stopped believing in it. That framing is what gives the play its modern edge: instead of heroes making grand speeches, you get the kind of characters most people have met at work.

Three of them are central to the publicity for the show:

  • The king, who is busier polishing his memoirs than his sword. Anyone who has worked for a boss more interested in their legacy than the job in front of them will recognise the type.
  • The warrior, who spends his time running sponsorship codes instead of battles, a nod to influencer culture dropped into ancient Greece.
  • The Trojan gate guard, who knows exactly what is hidden inside the horse and waves it through anyway. It is the punchline of the original myth turned into a character.

A cast of twelve actors brings the story to the stage. The organisers have not named the cast, the writer or the director, so for most of the audience the company will be a discovery on the night.

Why a world premiere is worth catching

This run at The Junction is billed as the world premiere, which means nobody in the audience will have seen the play before. The run is short: three nights, from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November. If you like to see new work before anyone else has had a chance to talk about it, this is the window.

It is also a chance to support writing and production made in the city rather than a touring show brought in from abroad. Twelve actors is a large cast for a new comedy, so expect a busy stage.

Do you need to know the myth?

Not really. The play is performed in English and pitched as comedy rather than a history lesson. A rough idea of the Trojan Horse story is plenty to follow it, and the show’s setup does most of the explaining. If you studied the classics at school you will probably catch a few extra references, but the jokes about bad bosses, office politics and self-promotion work without any background reading.

Who it suits

  • Fans of character comedy who enjoy satire built around recognisable types.
  • Colleagues on a team night out, who will likely spot their own workplace in the king and his court.
  • Couples looking for a date night that is a little different from dinner and a film.
  • Regular Alserkal Avenue visitors who like to pair an exhibition with an evening show.
  • Anyone who supports independent theatre and wants to see what Dubai’s own writers and performers are making.

The organisers have not published an age recommendation, so if you are thinking of bringing teenagers, it is worth contacting them before booking.

The Junction, Alserkal Avenue

The Junction is at Unit H72 in Alserkal Avenue, on the corner of 17th Street and 8th Street in Al Quoz. It is one of the venues that make Alserkal Avenue a hub for art and culture in Dubai, with galleries and creative spaces close by.

By car, leave Sheikh Zayed Road at the Al Manara exit (exit 43) and turn right onto Al Manara Street. Go straight to the first intersection, turn right onto 8th Street and continue to the roundabout, then take the second exit onto 17th Street. The Junction is on your left.

By Metro, take the Red Line to Noor Bank Station and finish the trip with a short taxi or bus ride. Most taxi drivers know the location.

Opening night on Friday 30 October starts at 7:15pm. If you cannot make your performance, tickets can be exchanged with another fan.
