Denis Matsuev in Concert: Classics & Jazz 2026 in Dubai brings one of the most powerful pianists of his generation to Dubai Opera on Wednesday 16 December. His Classics & Jazz programme moves from celebrated classical repertoire into jazz-inspired rhythm and improvisation, with a six-piece ensemble that includes cello, saxophone and the Russian domra. The concert starts at 8pm and runs for about two hours, including a break.
Who is Denis Matsuev?
Denis Matsuev was born in Irkutsk, in Siberia, in 1975 into a family of musicians. His father, a pianist and composer, was his first teacher, and his mother taught piano. At 15 he moved to Moscow to study at the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory, later working with the professors Aleksey Nasedkin and Sergei Dorensky.
He won the Grand Prix at his first international piano competition, in Johannesburg in 1994, but his international breakthrough came in 1998, when he won the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 23, one of the most prestigious prizes a pianist can win. Since then he has become known for commanding stage presence, technical brilliance and a big, powerful sound, especially in Russian Romantic music.
Recordings and collaborations
Matsuev has recorded Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Prokofiev and Stravinsky for RCA Red Seal and the Mariinsky label. His album Unknown Rachmaninoff, released in 2008, presented rarely heard pieces by the composer, and he released a live recording of his Carnegie Hall concert in 2009. He has worked with orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the St Petersburg Philharmonic, under conductors such as Mariss Jansons and Yuri Temirkanov.
He is also a festival builder. He founded Stars on Baikal in his home city of Irkutsk and the Crescendo festival, and he is artistic co-director of the Annecy Classic Festival in France. He has also served as artistic director of the Astana Piano Passion festival and competition, in 2012.
Classics & Jazz: what to expect
Alongside his classical career, Matsuev also performs jazz, and this programme brings both sides of his musical personality together on one stage. The idea is two musical worlds in conversation: the depth and scale of classical piano performance meeting the swing, syncopation and stylistic shifts of jazz. No individual pieces are listed on the ticket page, so the exact repertoire is part of the surprise.
The ensemble
Matsuev leads from the piano, joined by:
- Andrey Ivanov, double bass
- Borislav Strulev, cello
- Ekaterina Mochalova, domra
- David Tkebuchava, drums
- Sofia Turina, saxophone
It is an unusual line-up. Double bass, drums and saxophone are the backbone of a jazz group, but the cello brings a singing classical voice, and the domra, a plucked Russian folk instrument with a bright, mandolin-like tone, adds a colour you rarely hear on a concert stage. Listen for how the instruments trade lines as the music moves between styles.
The evening at Dubai Opera
The concert is a venue hire presented by M Premiere and MN Live, a third-party promoter, rather than a Dubai Opera production, although the building’s house rules apply. Dubai Opera opens two hours before the show and the auditorium 30 minutes before. Latecomers are not admitted once the performance begins, and late arrival is not grounds for a refund, so aim to be seated by 7:30pm.

Getting to Dubai Opera
Dubai Opera is on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard in Downtown Dubai. By car, leave Sheikh Zayed Road at the Financial Center Road exit, follow the signs for Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai, keep right and merge onto the boulevard; the venue is on your right. By Metro, take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, then walk about ten minutes or take a short taxi. A taxi from elsewhere in Downtown takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.
Who it suits
This is a concert for classical music lovers who enjoy a little swing, jazz fans curious about the classical repertoire, and pianists who want to see a Tchaikovsky Competition winner up close. It also makes a polished midweek night out for couples or a small group of friends who want something different from a standard recital.
