European Classics is an early-evening opera recital in Dubai at the Dubai Opera Studio on Saturday 7 November 2026, bringing soprano Aleksandra Chernenko, mezzo-soprano Alina Vasina and pianist Anna Schreider together for arias and duets by Puccini, Bellini, Mozart, Delibes and other great European composers. Presented by Pontum Solutions, the concert lasts around an hour and 45 minutes including a break, and it finishes in good time for dinner in Downtown Dubai.
The Programme: From Casta Diva to the Flower Duet
The evening draws on some of the best-loved music in the operatic repertoire, with two pieces at its centre. The first is Casta Diva, the soprano’s prayer to the moon from Bellini’s Norma, which premiered at La Scala in Milan in December 1831. It is one of the most famous arias ever written, and also one of the most demanding: Bellini is said to have rewritten it several times, and the first Norma, Giuditta Pasta, initially resisted singing it at all during rehearsals. In the full opera the prayer is sung with the chorus before leading into the faster cabaletta Ah! bello a me ritorna, so hearing it with piano alone puts the focus entirely on the soprano’s line.
The second is the Flower Duet from Delibes’ Lakmé, an opera set in British India and first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in April 1883. Sung in the first act by Lakmé and her servant Mallika as they gather flowers by a river, it has become one of the most recognisable duets for two female voices, which makes it a natural showpiece for a soprano and mezzo-soprano pairing. Around these two highlights sit further arias and duets from Puccini, Mozart and the wider European tradition.
The organisers describe the concert as an immersive dialogue in which voice and piano create a powerful yet intimate experience. With no orchestra, every phrase is carried by two singers and one pianist, which suits the scale of a studio space.
