About this event

Surge’s Design, Dine, Make a Difference Gala 2026 in Dubai brings the region’s architecture and interiors community together for a charity dinner in the Constellation Ballroom at JW Marriott Marina on Thursday 26 November. Doors open at 7pm and the evening runs until 1am, with money raised going to Surge’s safe water and sanitation projects around the world. This year’s theme is A Common Thread.

Who is Surge?

Surge, also known as Surge for Water, is a not-for-profit that provides safe water, sanitation, hygiene and menstrual health solutions to communities in need, working through local partners. It was co-founded in late 2008 by Shilpa Alva, who was born and raised in Dubai and later studied in the United States. Her turning point came at 21, when she spent a few months volunteering in a remote village in the Indian Himalayas and saw the reality of living without clean water and sanitation.

The organisation’s global base is in Chicago, and its Middle East arm launched in Dubai, where it is registered with International Humanitarian City. Funds raised by the region’s design community have gone towards projects such as drilling and repairing wells, rainwater harvesting systems, water filters and toilets. Surge describes itself as founded by women, for women, and its programmes have focused on countries including Haiti, Uganda, Indonesia and the Philippines, with the aim of breaking the cycle of poverty that a lack of safe water creates.

How the gala grew out of the design world

Design, Dine, Make a Difference, often shortened to DDD, has become a fixture in the Dubai design calendar. In earlier editions it was the finale of a year-long journey that began with a design challenge in the spring, with interior design houses creating pieces around a shared theme and auctioning them at the gala, and more than 50 companies from the regional architecture and design industry backing the night in some years. Themes have changed every year: the 2022 edition, for example, was built around Heritage, with twelve designers drawing on their own traditions and ancestral roots. Surge has also partnered with Love That Design on sustainability awards for MENA projects and products. The gala has usually been held in December, so this year’s late November date comes slightly earlier than regulars may expect.

The 2026 edition is presented by Acoulite, Sedus, Light Link and Surge. Acoulite and Sedus have both supported Surge for several years, so the room tends to mix studio owners, architects, lighting and furniture suppliers, and long-time supporters of the charity. The listing does not mention an auction or entertainment programme this year, so the focus is the dinner, the theme and the cause.

A Common Thread: what the theme means

The organisers describe A Common Thread as bringing designers, changemakers and supporters together to treat design as a force for good, connecting creativity, heritage and community with sustainable thinking. The dress code follows the same idea: guests are asked to come in Gala Chic or Sustainable Elegance, with reimagined, pre-loved and repurposed outfits encouraged. It is a fitting brief for a room full of designers, and a good excuse to rework something already in your wardrobe, borrow, or hunt down a vintage piece rather than buy new.

How the evening runs

  • Dinner: a three-course meal served in the ballroom.
  • Drinks: beer and wine served throughout the evening, billed as hops and grapes.
  • Seating: round tables of 11, which makes it easy for a studio or company to take a whole table.
  • Space: indoors in the ballroom, with access to an outdoor terrace, where smoking is permitted. Smoking is not allowed elsewhere.
  • Photos: cameras are allowed, so the outfits can be documented.

Every guest, whatever their age, needs a valid ticket. If your plans change, the ticket platform lets you pass your ticket on to another guest.

The venue: JW Marriott Marina

JW Marriott Hotel Marina is at 66 Al Marsa Street in Dubai Marina, and the Constellation Ballroom is one of its main event spaces. Parking and valet are both available at the hotel. By car, take Sheikh Zayed Road, follow the signs for Dubai Marina and continue along Al Marsa Street. By Metro, take the Red Line to DMCC station, which is a short walk from the hotel. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the simplest way home after a 1am finish.

Who it suits

The gala is made for the design community: interior designers, architects, suppliers and studio teams who want an industry night with a purpose. It also suits companies looking for a meaningful team evening, sustainability-minded friends who enjoy dressing up, and anyone who has followed Surge’s work and wants to support it directly.
