About this event

The Fairy Tale Immersive Show is a short, beautifully made projection theatre experience inside the BAPS Hindu Mandir complex in Abu Dhabi, telling the story of how the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the region came to be. It is easy to add to a temple visit, and it gives the carvings and courtyards outside a real sense of context.

Rather than reading the history from panels on a wall, you sit inside it. The theatre’s walls become a moving canvas, and the story of the Mandir is told through light, sound and animation from the first prayer to the opening day.

The story the show tells

The narrative begins in 1997, with Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s prayer in Sharjah for a mandir in the UAE. From there it follows the key milestones and the global effort behind the project, up to the temple’s inauguration in 2024 by Mahant Swami Maharaj and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Along the way it celebrates the craftsmanship and community spirit that went into the building. That matters because the Mandir is unusual in so many ways. According to published accounts of the project, the land was a gift from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the temple was built following the shilpa shastras, the ancient Hindu texts on temple construction. The exterior is pink sandstone from Rajasthan, the interior is Italian marble, and the seven spires represent the seven emirates. The temple was consecrated in February 2024 and opened to the public that March, and it welcomed more than two million visitors in its first year.

Seeing the show first makes those details far more meaningful when you step back outside.

Inside the immersive theatre

The production uses 20 video projectors to wrap the space in imagery, combined with surround sound and intricate animation. The effect is cinematic: scenes move across the walls around you, so you are surrounded by the story rather than watching a single screen.

A few points about how it runs:

  • Shows start every 30 minutes, from 9:30am through to 7:30pm, unless there is a technical issue.
  • Your ticket is for one person on the date you select.
  • Phones must be switched off or set to silent.
  • Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the theatre, even though personal phone photos are allowed elsewhere in the Mandir grounds.
  • The ticket covers the show only; food and drinks are not included.

Because the sessions are so frequent, you can plan your visit around the temple itself and slot the show in wherever it fits best.

Before you visit: registration, tickets and dress

This is the part worth reading carefully, because the BAPS Hindu Mandir has a strict entry process and the show sits inside the complex.

Register for the Mandir first

Prior registration is mandatory for entry to the Mandir, through the official visit page at mandir.ae/visit, and every visitor must book individually. You show your QR code at the gate, and the details on your pass are checked against a physical Emirates ID or passport. The Mandir says visit bookings should be made only once you have arrived in the UAE. Unregistered visitors are turned away, and a show ticket on its own will not get you in.

Collect your show ticket

Physical show tickets are collected at the UTSAV Information Desk, which sits just after the security frame when you arrive. Head there first, then make your way to the theatre.

Dress code and what to leave at home

As a place of worship, the Mandir asks visitors to avoid shorts, skirts above the knee, sleeveless tops and tight or transparent clothing. Sarongs are available at the front desk if needed. Food and drink, including water, are not allowed into the complex, and nor are professional cameras, selfie sticks, drones or pets.

Who it suits

  • First-time visitors to the Mandir who want to understand what they are looking at
  • Families: children aged 11 and under are welcome with a responsible adult holding a valid ticket, and the listed ticket category is for guests aged 13 and above
  • Anyone interested in architecture, craftsmanship or how the UAE’s communities have shaped its landmarks
  • Visitors of every faith and background, as the show is about the building’s journey as much as its spiritual life

Wheelchairs are available on request at the Mandir, and People of Determination are given priority at entry.

Timing your visit

The Mandir is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 8pm and is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. One lovely way to structure a visit is to arrive in the afternoon, register and pass through security, watch The Fairy Tale, explore the carvings, which feature scenes from Hindu scripture alongside UAE animals such as camels, oryx and falcons, and then stay for the evening Ganga Aarti. The aarti takes place at 7:30pm on weekdays, with an extra 6:45pm session on weekends and holidays.

The Mandir is in Abu Mreikhah, off the Dubai to Abu Dhabi highway, and the nearest exit is Exit 366 on Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Road (E11). From central Abu Dhabi, the Platinumlist directions suggest heading along Corniche Road, then Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street (E10), and following signs to Truck Road (E20). Its position between the two cities also makes it a practical stop on a drive between Dubai and the capital.
