Volunteering with SmartLife Foundation

About SmartLife Foundation

SmartLife Foundation is a Dubai-based non-profit that works to empower blue-collar and frontline workers across the UAE. Rather than focusing only on handouts, it puts a lot of energy into education, skills and wellbeing, helping workers build confidence and opportunities for the future.

The foundation is registered with Dubai’s Community Development Authority (CDA) and has its office in Al Quoz. Its president is Arun Krishan. It describes itself as a multiple award-winning organisation, and it links its work to eight of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

What volunteers do

SmartLife’s programmes are broad, which means there is a good range of ways to help. The foundation runs classes and activities in areas such as:

  • Spoken English
  • Computer basics
  • Financial counselling
  • MEP certifications
  • Health and wellness
  • Talent activities, including singing, dancing and cooking

It also runs focused programmes such as Smart Buddy, Smart Elder and Smart Woman. Volunteers give their time and expertise across these programmes, and the foundation says it matches people to specific, realistic opportunities. So if you can teach, mentor, coach a sport, help with an event or bring a professional skill, there is likely a place for it.

SmartLife also runs community events through the year, including Smart Idol, Smart Chef and Smart Cup. These are big, joyful days for workers, and events like these usually need plenty of helpers on the ground.

Who can volunteer

SmartLife has not published a detailed list of volunteer requirements, such as a minimum age or time commitment. That is common for organisations that match people to roles individually. We would suggest being clear about your skills and availability when you sign up, so the team can place you well.

Teaching or mentoring roles tend to suit people who can commit to a regular slot over several weeks, while event days are better for those who prefer a one-off.

In our experience, skills-based volunteering like this is some of the most rewarding there is. Helping someone practise English for a job interview, or understand a budget, can change how they experience life here. If you work in finance, IT, engineering, health or the creative arts, mention it when you sign up. A little professional know-how goes a long way in a classroom setting, and the foundation is keen to put real expertise to good use.

Coming up: Smart Cup 2026

SmartLife lists Smart Cup 2026 on Sunday 22 November 2026, a full-day event at Insportz in Al Quoz, Dubai. Registration was shown as open on the foundation’s website. If you would like to help on the day or support a team, keep an eye on the events page and get in touch early.

Other ways to help

SmartLife is raising funds for the Smart Hub, a planned community centre for frontline workers. Its website showed the project as 26% funded, with a “Sponsor Now” option for those who want to contribute. Companies can also explore sponsorships, partnerships and employee engagement programmes, which is a good route for a team-building day with real purpose.

Good to know before you go

  • Respect and dignity: SmartLife’s work is about empowerment. Treat participants as learners and teammates, not as recipients of charity.
  • Photos: ask before photographing anyone, and follow the organisers’ guidance at events.
  • Dress: no dress code is published. As a general guide, modest, comfortable clothing works well for classes and community events.
  • Reliability: if you sign up for a regular class, try to stick with it. Consistency matters to learners.
