About this event

Paul Smith HAPPY Live 2027 in Abu Dhabi brings the Liverpool comedian’s record-breaking stand-up show to Etihad Arena on Yas Island as part of Abu Dhabi Comedy Season. It is his first time performing in the UAE, and HAPPY is a show built on the thing he is best known for: talking to the audience and turning whatever comes back into comedy.

Presented by Live Nation Middle East, it is a late Sunday show. Doors open at 8:30pm and Paul is due on stage at 9:30pm.

Who is Paul Smith?

Paul Smith built his reputation in the comedy clubs of Liverpool. He is the resident compere at Hot Water Comedy Club, where he has long been a firm favourite, and his awards include being crowned Liverpool’s New Comedian of the Year and reaching the final of Leicester Comedian of the Year.

Compering a busy club night is where he sharpened his crowd work, and clips of those exchanges with audience members have since travelled far beyond Merseyside. His 2025 tour sold out theatres across Australia and New Zealand, and HAPPY has taken him into arenas.

HAPPY is the biggest tour he has done so far: more than 100 dates across the UK, Ireland, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, with the Middle East now added. UK listings for the tour include arena nights at the M&S Bank Arena in his home city of Liverpool and the Utilita Arena in Cardiff, a long way from the club rooms where he started.

What HAPPY is like

The Abu Dhabi listing describes the show as raw and fearless comedy, packed with sharp observations, wild stories and big laughs. In practice, the evening mixes three things:

  • Crowd work: Paul chats with the audience, asks questions and builds routines from the answers, so no two nights are the same.
  • True stories from his own life, told with plenty of detail.
  • Observational comedy about everyday situations most people will recognise.

The show’s own description calls it fast-paced, spontaneous and unpredictable, a show that only really comes alive in front of an audience. That means the Abu Dhabi crowd, with its mix of nationalities, jobs and accents, is likely to shape a fair bit of the night. Sitting near the front? Be ready to chat.

UK listings for the HAPPY tour give a running time of around two and a quarter hours, so allow for a late finish.

A show without phones

This is a gadget-locked event, which suits a show where so much depends on spontaneous conversation:

  • Phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, earbuds, cameras and similar devices are not allowed in the performance space.
  • Set your phone to silent once your ticket is scanned. At security it goes into an individual JAYB pouch that you keep with you.
  • You can only use your device in the designated JAYB Phone Use Areas, and it must be resealed before you leave them.
  • Photography and video are banned at all times, and anyone seen using a device during the show will be escorted out.

For audience members, it means whatever you say to Paul stays in the room rather than turning up online.

Who it suits

HAPPY suits anyone who enjoys quick, interactive stand-up and has watched Paul’s crowd-work clips. British and Irish residents in the UAE will feel at home with the Liverpool humour, but the format works for any English-speaking audience. The age rules are firm: guests must be 16 or over with a valid ticket, under-16s are not admitted, and anyone aged 16 to 20 must be with an adult aged 21 or over. Staff may ask for photo ID and the card used to buy the tickets.

The same arena hosts Whitney Cummings earlier the same evening, so committed comedy fans could make a full Sunday of it on Yas Island.

Etihad Arena rules and getting there

  • Bags larger than 30 x 30 x 15 cm are not allowed, and there is no cloakroom or bag storage.
  • No flags of any kind, including national flags.
  • Payments inside the venue are contactless only.
  • Download your e-ticket to your phone before you arrive, as it is scanned at the turnstiles. Re-entry is not permitted.
  • Accessible seating must be booked in advance for guests with disabilities or access needs.
  • Tickets are non-refundable, non-transferable and non-exchangeable.

Guests are asked to behave in line with UAE traditions and culture. By car from central Abu Dhabi, take Sheikh Zayed Road and follow the signs to Yas Island and Etihad Arena. Most taxi drivers know the venue, and the nearest bus stop is Al Matar Al Qadeem, about 800 metres away. With a 9:30pm start and a long show, it is worth sorting your ride home in advance if you are heading back to Dubai.
