About this event

The Nutcracker by the Bolshoi Ballet comes to Dubai Opera from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December 2026, bringing Tchaikovsky’s much-loved Christmas ballet to the city with the Bolshoi’s principal dancers and the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra in the pit. It is the climax of the Bolshoi Theatre’s first official tour of the UAE, presented by Dubai Opera in collaboration with Art Seasons.

For ballet lovers in the Gulf this is a rare chance: the Moscow company performing one of its signature productions without the need to travel to Russia, in the run-up to Christmas, in a house built for exactly this kind of evening.

The Bolshoi’s first official UAE tour

The Nutcracker closes a five-day Bolshoi residency at Dubai Opera. The tour opens on 2 December with Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Tsar’s Bride, followed on 3 December by a symphonic concert from the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, before the ballet company takes the stage for The Nutcracker on 4, 5 and 6 December. Seeing the opera, orchestra and ballet of one theatre across a single week is something few touring companies attempt.

The visit is also one of the headline moments of Dubai Opera’s 10th anniversary season, which runs from September 2026 to January 2027. Bringing the Bolshoi to Downtown Dubai for the first time is the kind of booking the venue has chosen to mark its first decade.

Grigorovich’s Nutcracker in Dubai

Tchaikovsky described The Nutcracker as a ballet-féerie, a fairy ballet, and it remains a Christmas tale of childhood, miracles, courage and first love. The Bolshoi dances the version by Yuri Grigorovich, the company’s legendary chief choreographer, which premiered in Moscow in 1966 and has been a fixture of the Bolshoi repertoire ever since.

Grigorovich turned the story into a philosophical meditation on the unattainability of ideal love. He filled the ballet with romantic introspection, lifting what was once seen as a simple children’s matinee into a 20th-century classic. His version is a continuous, fully danced coming-of-age story, in which the battle with the monsters is only the start of a joyful journey to the top of a magnificent Christmas tree. Rather than long passages of mime, the narrative is carried by dance from start to finish.

That approach is also why the production is such a showcase for the company. Grigorovich’s choreography gives the Bolshoi Ballet’s finest dancers the chance to show their artistry at its very best, and principal dancers are part of the tour. Casting may vary from one performance to the next, so the dancers you see depend on the date you choose.

Tchaikovsky’s score, played live

A touring ballet often travels with a recorded score or a local orchestra. Here, Tchaikovsky’s music is played live by the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra itself, conducted by Pavel Klinichev, a long-serving Bolshoi conductor closely associated with the company’s ballet repertoire. From the overture to the Waltz of the Flowers and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, hearing the score from the theatre’s own musicians is a large part of what makes these performances special.

The performance lasts about 2 hours and 15 minutes including an interval, a comfortable length for a December night out and manageable for older children.

Who it suits and house rules at Dubai Opera

This is a natural choice for ballet lovers, families looking for a festive outing and anyone who has wanted to see the Bolshoi on stage. Children aged 3 and over can attend with their own ticket, while children under 3 are not permitted in the Main Auditorium. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over.

There are several performances between 4 and 6 December. Check the start time for your chosen date when you book, as tickets are valid only for that date and time. Dubai Opera opens its doors two hours before each show and the auditorium opens 30 minutes before curtain up. Latecomers are not admitted once the performance has started.

The venue asks guests to avoid overly casual or provocative clothing such as shorts or flip-flops, and those who do not comply will not be admitted; festive smart wear suits the occasion. Photography, video and audio recording are not allowed in the auditorium, phones must be switched off or silenced, outside food and drink are not permitted, and bags may be searched.
