About this event

Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra Symphonic Concert 2026 in Dubai is the orchestra’s first appearance at Dubai Opera, on Thursday 3 December, with Valery Gergiev on the podium. Presented by Dubai Opera in collaboration with Art Seasons, it comes the night after the Bolshoi’s staging of Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride at the same house, so for two evenings Downtown Dubai becomes a small outpost of Moscow’s most famous theatre.

Russia’s oldest musical ensemble

The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra traces its origins to 1776, the year Catherine II licensed Prince Pyotr Urusov to stage performances in Moscow and the company that became the Bolshoi was formed. That makes it, in the ticket page’s words, Russia’s oldest musical ensemble, and it marks its 250th anniversary in 2026. Its first purely symphonic concert came much later, on 4 May 1919, under the conductor Serge Koussevitzky.

For most of its life the orchestra has played in the pit for the Bolshoi’s opera and ballet. This is the orchestra that accompanied the world premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake in 1877, and premieres of Rachmaninoff’s Aleko and Francesca da Rimini, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov in its 1888 version and Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Today it has more than 300 musicians, many of whom also work as soloists and chamber players, and its members include international competition laureates and Honoured and People’s Artists of Russia.

Its repertoire stretches from the 18th century to new works, and a concert like this one puts the orchestra on stage rather than below it, which is a different experience from hearing it accompany a ballet.

Valery Gergiev on the podium

Valery Gergiev is one of the best-known conductors of the past four decades. Born in Moscow in 1953 and raised in Vladikavkaz, he studied at the Leningrad Conservatory under Ilya Musin, joined the Kirov Opera as an assistant conductor in 1978 and became chief conductor and artistic director of what is now the Mariinsky Theatre in 1988. He has led the Mariinsky ever since.

Outside Russia he was principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic from 1995 to 2008 and of the London Symphony Orchestra from 2007 to 2015, then chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic. In December 2023 he was appointed to lead the Bolshoi as well, becoming the first person to run both the Mariinsky and the Bolshoi at the same time. He is closely associated with Russian music, especially Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, and his recording of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet with the LSO won BBC Music Magazine’s Disc of the Year in 2011.

The programme

The works to be performed have not been listed on the ticket page yet. The programme is still to be confirmed, so check the listing nearer the date.

How the evening runs

The concert starts at 8pm and lasts about two hours with one interval. The Dubai Opera building opens two hours before the start and the auditorium doors open 30 minutes before, so there is time for a drink in the foyer first. Food and drink are not permitted inside the auditorium, including during the interval, and outside food and drink are not allowed in the building.

Dubai Opera recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before curtain. Once the music starts, latecomers are held until a suitable break, at management’s discretion, and with a single interval that could mean missing the entire first half.

Dress code and rules

Overly casual or provocative clothing, such as shorts or flip-flops, is not accepted, and guests who do not comply will be refused entry. Photography, video and audio recording are not allowed in the auditorium unless authorised, phones must be off or silenced, and bags may be searched on entry.

Age policy

The concert is for ages 12 and over. Children under 12 are not permitted in the Main Auditorium, and anyone under 18 must be with an adult aged 18 or over.

Who it suits

Classical music lovers in the UAE rarely get the chance to hear a Russian theatre orchestra of this age and size without travelling. It suits listeners who know Gergiev’s recordings and want to see him live, Russian-speaking residents for whom the Bolshoi is a household name, and anyone who wants to mark the orchestra’s 250th year at its Dubai debut. If you are booking The Tsar’s Bride on 2 December as well, the two nights show the company’s two sides: opera in the pit, then the orchestra in full view on stage.

Getting to Dubai Opera

From Sheikh Zayed Road, take the exit for Financial Center Road and follow the signs for Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai, then join Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, where Dubai Opera is on the right. By Metro, ride the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station and walk about 10 minutes, or take a short taxi ride.
