Qasr Al Watan is the working Presidential Palace of the UAE in Abu Dhabi, and one of the few places in the world where visitors can walk through the halls of a functioning seat of government. Its name translates as “Palace of the Nation”, and a visit is a look at how the country governs, hosts and presents itself, inside a building of white stone, gold details and carved domes.
From state venue to public landmark
Before it welcomed the public, the palace was used for official state hosting. It opened to visitors on 11 March 2019, in a ceremony hosted by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and it still hosts state occasions: in May 2025 it was the setting for US President Donald Trump’s visit to the UAE. In 2026 it was named among the world’s top 100 travel spots.
Because it is a working government site, opening hours are subject to change, and the palace occasionally closes for state events. The current ticket listing covers visits up to 31 March 2027, with the palace open between 10am and 5:30pm on regular days.
What you see inside Qasr Al Watan
Allow at least two to three hours for the palace, gardens and exhibitions. Visits start at the Visitor Centre, where security screening takes place, before you continue into the main building.
The Great Hall
The centrepiece is the Great Hall, crowned by a central dome 37 metres in diameter, larger than the main dome of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Look up at the patterned interior of the dome and down at the marble floors to appreciate the craftsmanship that covers almost every surface.
The Presidential Gifts Gallery and Presidential Ballroom
The gifts gallery displays diplomatic presents given to the UAE by leaders from around the world, each a small story about the country’s international friendships. The Presidential Ballroom shows the scale of the spaces used for state occasions.
The House of Knowledge
The palace library, known as the House of Knowledge, holds manuscripts, books and ancient folios, many dating back to the Arab Golden Age and reflecting the Arab world’s contribution to science, philosophy and literature. One ticket listing notes that the library can be accessed free after registering at the Visitor Centre.
Palace in Motion after dark
As evening falls, the Palace in Motion show lights up the palace façade at 7pm. It lasts about 15 minutes, and last entry for the show is 6:30pm, so plan your visit to end in the gardens rather than leaving at closing time. Seeing the white and gold building in late afternoon light and then watching it come alive after dark makes for a natural half-day itinerary.
Security, dress code and practical rules
Expect an airport-style security check. Bags larger than 500 mm wide by 350 mm high are not allowed through, and there are no lockers, so oversized bags will be refused entry. Carry a valid photo ID, and note that food, drinks, glassware and alcohol cannot be brought inside.
In line with local customs, shorts should cover the knees and shoulders should be covered. Non-commercial photography is encouraged in all areas, but wearable recording devices are not allowed, and you must not photograph security staff or systems.
The palace welcomes visitors of all ages, including expecting mothers, and is fully wheelchair accessible. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult, and ticket sales are final and non-refundable. Entry includes the palace, gardens, Visitor Centre and public exhibitions, plus parking.
Getting to Qasr Al Watan in Al Ras Al Akhdar
The palace stands in Al Ras Al Akhdar, on the western tip of Abu Dhabi island, close to the Emirates Palace area. You can drive and use the palace parking, which is included with entry, take one of the bus routes that serve the area, or arrive by taxi; drivers know the location well. The gardens around the palace are part of the visit and give wide views of the façade.
Who will enjoy a visit
History lovers, architecture fans and photographers get the most from the domes, manuscripts and diplomatic gifts, while families and mixed groups benefit from the step-free access and the short evening light show. For first-time visitors to the capital, it pairs well with other landmarks on the island.
