The Emirati Hospitality Experience in Dubai is a four-hour cultural tour run from the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) in Al Fahidi, combining a trolley ride past the old city’s landmarks with Emirati storytellers, a traditional meal on the majlis floor and an open question-and-answer session. It is a direct, friendly way for visitors and new residents to meet Emiratis and ask about daily life, customs and history in a relaxed setting.
Who runs it: the SMCCU
The SMCCU was founded in 1998 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, as a non-profit organisation to help visitors and expatriates understand Emirati culture, customs, traditions and religion. Its motto, “Open Doors. Open Minds.”, sums up the approach: no topic is off limits, and presenters actively invite questions.
The centre is based in a traditional wind-tower house in the historic Al Fahidi neighbourhood of Bur Dubai, an area that has been a trading and market district since the 1890s. Beyond this tour, it is known for its cultural breakfasts and lunches, heritage tours, Arabic lessons in the local Gulf dialect and Ramadan iftars.
The trolley route
The tour travels aboard a traditional-style trolley, with Emirati storytellers sharing the history of Dubai and the stories behind each stop. The landmarks on the route include:
- Al Fahidi Fort: home to the Dubai Museum and one of the oldest buildings in the city
- Al Seef: the Creekside district that recreates old Dubai’s architecture along the water
- The abra stations on Dubai Creek: where the traditional wooden water taxis still cross between Bur Dubai and Deira
- Al Shindagha: the historic district at the mouth of the Creek, home to the Al Shindagha Museum
- Etihad Museum (Union House): the site associated with the signing of the agreement that formed the UAE in 1971
The trolley pauses for around five minutes at Al Fahidi Fort, the abra, Al Shindagha Museum and Etihad Museum, enough for photographs and a closer look while the storytellers fill in the background. This is an overview of the city’s heritage rather than a full museum tour; entry fees to the historical attractions are not included.
Jumeirah Mosque
The longest stop is a 15-minute external walking tour at Jumeirah Mosque, one of Dubai’s best-known mosques, where you can admire the architecture of the mosque and its majlis. Entry to the Jumeirah Mosque Majlis and to the Once Upon A Time Museum is included in the package.
Camels, falcons and Emirati hospitality
From October to June, the experience includes an encounter with camels and a falcon, two animals that sit at the centre of Bedouin heritage. Outside those months this part of the programme is not available, so the cooler season is the best time to book.
Hospitality is the thread running through the whole tour. Guests are welcomed with Emirati-style coffee and dates, the classic gesture of welcome in an Emirati home, and Emirati snacks are served along the way, with drinking water provided throughout.
The meal and the Q&A
The tour includes a traditional Emirati meal, served as breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner depending on the session you book. The meal is eaten seated on the carpeted floor of the majlis, as it would be in a traditional home, so wear something comfortable for sitting on the floor.
The meal is paired with a question-and-answer session at the SMCCU Heritage House. This is the heart of the experience: Emirati presenters talk openly about family life, religion, national dress, food and how Dubai has changed, and they welcome any question asked respectfully.
How the four hours fit together
Think of the tour in three parts: the welcome and the storytelling on the trolley, the stops at Dubai’s heritage landmarks and Jumeirah Mosque, and the long, unhurried meal and conversation at the centre. The pace is gentle throughout, with short walks rather than long ones, and the Q&A tends to be where the time disappears.
Who it suits
The experience works for first-time visitors who want context for what they are seeing, new residents keen to understand local customs, families, school and university groups, and colleagues looking for a cultural outing. There are infant, child and adult tickets. The buses carry wheelchair lifts with space for two wheelchairs; guests who need one should bring their own and tell the operator when booking.
Practical points
The meeting point is the SMCCU on Al Mussallah Road in Al Fahidi; arrive 15 minutes before the start. Hotel and residence pick-ups are not included, and alcoholic drinks are not included. Bookings can be cancelled or rescheduled up to 72 hours before the experience.
Al Fahidi is easy to combine with a wander through the nearby textile souk or an abra ride across the Creek to Deira. For more ideas, see our art and culture guide, our guide for UAE newcomers, more attractions and things to do in Dubai.
