About this event

Louvre Abu Dhabi is the art museum on the waterfront of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, and the first universal museum in the Arab world. Under Jean Nouvel’s vast latticed dome, its galleries place works from different cultures and eras side by side, so a single visit can take you from ancient artefacts to modern paintings, including Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait.

Visitors under 18 go free, which makes it one of the easiest cultural days out in the capital for families.

How Louvre Abu Dhabi came about

The museum grew out of an intergovernmental agreement signed by France and the UAE on 6 March 2007, which lent the Louvre name to Abu Dhabi and set up loans of artworks from French institutions. Agence France-Muséums coordinates those loans, and the number of borrowed works was planned to decrease as Abu Dhabi’s own permanent collection grew. In December 2021 the two countries signed an extension of the agreement for another thirty years.

Louvre Abu Dhabi opened to the public on 11 November 2017, the first international museum to open in the Saadiyat Cultural District, and a 2024 report said it had welcomed five million visitors since then.

What you see inside the galleries

Instead of separating art by country, the galleries tell a story of humanity through shared themes, following a chronological thread so that objects from different civilisations sit in the same rooms. The effect is easy to follow even if you are not an art specialist: you notice how people in different places made similar tools, worshipped, traded and painted portraits.

Among the best-known works are Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait and Leonardo da Vinci’s La Belle Ferronnière, shown alongside sculptures, statues and artefacts from around the world. The permanent collection is joined by loans from Paris and other French museums, and temporary exhibitions change through the year, so it is worth checking what is on before you go.

Entry gives access to all open galleries. Most visitors spend a few hours inside, moving at their own pace through the connected rooms before heading out to the plazas.

Jean Nouvel’s dome and the rain of light

The building is as much of a draw as the art. The museum complex is made up of 55 individual buildings, 23 of them galleries, gathered under a dome 180 metres in diameter that Nouvel described as the project’s most challenging element. According to the museum, the dome weighs 7,500 tonnes, similar to the Eiffel Tower, and is made of eight layers: four outer layers of stainless steel and four inner layers of aluminium.

Sunlight filters through the geometric pattern to create the “rain of light” effect over the walkways and water below. It changes through the day, so the plazas look different in the morning, at midday and as the light softens later on, and after dark thousands of lights bring the structure to life.

Planning your Louvre Abu Dhabi visit

The current ticket listing runs to 31 December 2026 and includes parking at the museum. Last entry for museum ticket holders is 5:30pm. Tickets are final and non-refundable, so check your chosen date before booking. Children under 18 enter free; several sources say they collect a free pass at the ticket office rather than booking online.

The museum suits visitors of all ages, including expecting mothers, and the whole experience is wheelchair accessible. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Bring a valid photo ID. Food, drinks, glassware and alcohol cannot be brought inside, so plan to use the museum’s café for refreshments. Casual clothing is fine, but beachwear is not allowed, which is worth knowing if you are combining the museum with a morning at one of Saadiyat’s beaches.

You can drive and use the museum car park, take one of the bus routes that serve the museum from across Abu Dhabi, or come by taxi from Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

Make a day of it in the Saadiyat Cultural District

Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of several major institutions grouped together on the western side of Saadiyat Island. The district plan includes the Zayed National Museum, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, with Manarat Al Saadiyat and Berklee Abu Dhabi nearby, and the Abrahamic Family House is also close by. Pairing the Louvre with one neighbour makes a full cultural day, or you can spend the morning in the galleries and the afternoon on the island’s public beaches.

The cooler months are the most comfortable time to linger under the dome and along the waterfront.
