About this event

Crypt of Comedy is the Halloween special of The Laughter Lounge, Callback Comedy’s variety night, presented by New Covent Garden at the Playhouse Studio in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates. On Saturday 31 October it brings together stand-up, improv, audience games and a roast battle in one evening, with the hosts dressed as what the organisers call a ghoul gang and prizes for the best-dressed guests.

Callback Comedy bills The Laughter Lounge as Dubai’s only variety comedy show, and the format is the point: instead of a straight run of stand-ups, the night switches between different kinds of comedy so the energy keeps changing.

Who is on the bill

Hosts: Sunny and Noha 911

Sunny and Noha 911 host the night, linking the acts, running the games and pulling the audience into the action. In a variety format the hosts do a lot of the heavy lifting, and they are the constant thread through an evening that otherwise moves quickly between acts.

Stand-up: Harsh, Azeem, Moncef, Obaid and Faizan

Five stand-up comedians make up the line-up: Harsh, Azeem, Moncef, Obaid and Faizan. With five comics on one bill, you get a spread of voices and styles rather than one long set, which suits anyone who likes to sample a scene.

Improv: Off Script

Improv group Off Script bring unscripted scenes to the stage, built from audience suggestions. Audience members are invited to take part, so this is the moment to shout out an idea if you have one.

Games, roasts and costumes

The variety element goes beyond the acts. Callback Comedy’s Mystery Box of Joy brings the audience directly into the show, and an impromptu roast battle puts quick wits to the test in real time. Neither is rehearsed, which is why no two Laughter Lounge nights are the same.

The organisers have not published a running order, so expect the hosts to move between stand-up sets, improv scenes and games as the night unfolds. A roast battle, for anyone new to the idea, is a head-to-head where comics trade good-natured insults at each other’s expense, and the impromptu version means nobody gets to prepare their best lines in advance. Expect quick back-and-forth rather than a polished routine.

Halloween costumes are encouraged rather than required. The organisers expect plenty of spooky outfits, and the best-dressed audience members win prizes, so it is worth making an effort if you enjoy dressing up.

A burger with every ticket

Wimpy is the night’s collaboration partner, and every ticket holder receives a burger from Wimpy’s Your 6 Your Mix menu. It is an unusual addition to a comedy night, and it means you can come straight from work without worrying about dinner first.

Good to know before you book

  • Timings: doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 8:30pm. The event is scheduled to finish around 10:30pm.
  • Filming: the show is being recorded, and guests may appear on camera and in future advertising for New Covent Garden, Wimpy and Callback Comedy. If you would rather not be filmed, bear that in mind when choosing where to sit.
  • Language and age: the listing does not state the language of the performance or an age policy. If you plan to bring teenagers, check with the organisers first.
  • Tickets: if you cannot make it, you can exchange your ticket with another fan.

Who it suits

  • Comedy fans who want variety, with stand-up, improv and games in one night.
  • Friends who want to laugh rather than dance on Halloween.
  • Costume lovers, with prizes on offer for the best outfits.
  • Anyone new to Dubai’s local comedy scene, since a five-comic bill is a quick way to find new favourites.
  • People heading out after work, as the included burger takes care of dinner.
