Our guide to things to do in October in the UAE

October is the month when the list of things to do in the UAE suddenly gets long again. The worst of the heat breaks, evenings become genuinely pleasant, and the big seasonal attractions throw open their gates for the winter. It is the start of what residents simply call “the season”, and the mood across the country shifts from hibernation to plans every weekend. Here is our guide to what usually happens, where to go and how to make the most of a month that feels like a fresh start.

October weather: the turning point

Average highs in Dubai fall to around 35 to 36°C in October, with nights near 24°C, and the difference between the start and end of the month is noticeable. Early October can still feel like summer, while the last week often brings the first evenings where sitting outside is a pleasure rather than an endurance test. Humidity stays fairly high, averaging around 60%, and the sea is warm at roughly 30°C, which makes it one of the best months of the year for swimming. Beaches become busy again at weekends, and outdoor terraces start to reopen across the city.

Reopening season: Global Village, gardens and parks

October is reopening month. Global Village, Dubai’s much loved multicultural festival park near Dubai Studio City, usually opens its new season in mid October and runs through to around May, with country pavilions, street food, rides and nightly shows. Dubai Miracle Garden, with its vast floral displays, and Dubai Safari Park typically reopen in October too, as do outdoor theme parks at Dubai Parks and Resorts. Exact opening dates change each year, so check official announcements before you go. For a wider list of ideas, see our attractions page.

  • Visit Global Village on a weekday evening to avoid the biggest weekend crowds.
  • Arrive at outdoor gardens and parks early or late in the day in early October, when it is still warm.
  • Look for season passes if you plan to return several times.

Halloween, Diwali and autumn celebrations

October ends with Halloween, which has become a big occasion in the UAE for families and party goers alike. Expect trick or treating in some residential communities, themed nights at theme parks and attractions, fancy dress brunches and adults only parties; our Halloween in Dubai guide has the details. Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, follows a lunar calendar and usually falls in October or November. When it lands in October, Dubai typically marks it with fireworks, light displays and cultural performances at Al Seef on Dubai Creek and at Global Village, along with festive shopping and dining offers.

Events, exhibitions and the business calendar

October is traditionally one of the busiest months for exhibitions and conferences in Dubai. GITEX Global, the region’s giant technology show, was long held in October at Dubai World Trade Centre, but it has moved to the Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City Dubai with a December slot, so always check the latest dates. Other trade shows and conferences fill the halls through the autumn, and hotels and roads around Sheikh Zayed Road can be busier during big events. Live entertainment gathers pace as well, with concerts, comedy and theatre filling indoor venues. Browse our business networking page for meetups and our concerts page for gigs.

Half term, holidays and family days out

Many UAE schools have a short autumn mid-term break in October, usually lasting about a week, though the timing varies between schools and curricula, so check your own calendar. It is a popular time for a short trip, a staycation or a burst of family days out now that the weather allows. Outdoor play areas, beach parks and community markets begin to fill up again, and kids’ programmes at malls and attractions often coincide with the break. Our kids events page is a good place to start.

Ramadan and the two Eids move about 11 days earlier each year because they follow the lunar Islamic calendar. In some years one of them falls in October; in others it does not. When Ramadan falls in the season, expect shorter working hours, iftar and suhoor offers, and a quieter pace during the day. Official holiday dates are confirmed by the UAE government, usually close to the time, so check the announcements before booking.

Getting active again

With cooler mornings and evenings, outdoor sport comes back to life. Cyclists return to Al Qudra and the Meydan track, runners head to Kite Beach and the Dubai Water Canal, and hiking in Hatta and Ras Al Khaimah becomes realistic again, at least for early starts by the end of the month. Outdoor fitness classes and community sports leagues restart, and many people use October to train for the Dubai Fitness Challenge, which usually begins at the end of October or start of November. Kayaking and paddleboarding in the mangroves are another great way to welcome the cooler weather.

Elsewhere in the UAE in October

Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, Saadiyat Beach and Yas Island are all excellent this month, and the capital’s cultural venues are a calm alternative to the Dubai crowds; see our Abu Dhabi guide. In Sharjah, Al Noor Island and the Al Majaz Waterfront come into their own on mild evenings. Ras Al Khaimah’s mountains and beaches reopen for adventure season, and Fujairah’s east coast is a favourite for diving and snorkelling. Then get ready for an even fuller month in November.

How long is the Global Village season in Dubai?

The Global Village season in Dubai usually lasts around seven months, opening in mid October and running until around May, before closing for the hottest months. The park, near Dubai Studio City off Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, features country pavilions, international street food, fairground rides and nightly stage shows. Opening dates are confirmed each year on its official channels, and weekday evenings are usually the least crowded.

Which part of October is best for a beach day in Dubai?

The second half of October is usually best for a beach day in Dubai, when the sea is still around 30°C and air temperatures ease to the mid 30s°C or below. Mornings and late afternoons are ideal on beaches such as JBR, Kite Beach and La Mer. The first half of the month can still feel hot, so the last two weeks usually give the most comfortable balance of sun and warmth.

How do kids celebrate Halloween in Dubai?

Children in Dubai usually celebrate Halloween with costume parties, themed activities at malls and attractions, and trick or treating in some residential communities where neighbours opt in. Theme parks and family venues often run Halloween events over the last weekends of October, and many schools hold dress up days. Adults have their own options, from themed brunches to parties. See our Halloween in Dubai guide for ideas.

Has GITEX moved away from its October slot in Dubai?

Yes, GITEX Global, the region’s biggest technology exhibition, has moved from its long time October slot at Dubai World Trade Centre to the Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City Dubai, with dates in December. Expo City is served by the Expo 2020 station on the Dubai Metro Red Line. Check the official GITEX website for confirmed dates and registration details before planning a visit.

What is the best time of day to visit Dubai Miracle Garden in October?

Late afternoon into the evening is usually the best time to visit Dubai Miracle Garden in October, the month it typically reopens after its summer closure, because daytime heat can still be strong. The garden, in Al Barsha South near Dubailand, is known for its huge floral sculptures and displays made from millions of flowers. Exact reopening dates are announced each year, so check its official website before you go.

Do all UAE schools take the same October half term?

No, UAE schools do not all take the same October half term: many usually have a short break of about a week, but the precise dates are set by the Ministry of Education and can differ for private schools and some curricula. Some private schools split their break between October and February, and some Indian curriculum schools follow a different calendar. Always confirm with your child’s school before booking travel or holiday camps.

Where can I see Diwali fireworks in Dubai?

Dubai usually marks Diwali with free fireworks at Al Seef on the Bur Dubai side of Dubai Creek, and Global Village typically adds its own displays on festival weekends. Diwali follows the lunar Hindu calendar, so it usually falls in October or November. Dubai’s festival organisers announce the programme of fireworks, concerts and shopping offers a few weeks ahead, and the Dubai Metro is the easiest way to get there.
