Zayed National Museum is the national museum of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi, telling the story of the country and its Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It opened in the Saadiyat Cultural District on 3 December 2025, and its galleries trace the land and people of the Emirates from the earliest human activity in the region to Sheikh Zayed’s legacy.
The collection holds more than 3,000 objects, with over 1,500 on display across six permanent galleries on two floors, mixing archaeological finds, historic objects, reconstructions, contemporary installations and audiovisual and sensory experiences.
Lord Norman Foster’s falcon-wing building
The museum was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners. Its five steel towers are inspired by the wings of a falcon in flight, a bird with a special place in Emirati culture, and the design combines long-established Emirati building principles with sustainable technology suited to the local climate. The silhouette has quickly become one of the most recognisable on Saadiyat Island.
Walking Al Masar Garden
Your visit begins outdoors on Al Masar Garden, a 600-metre path that runs from the Saadiyat coast up to the museum entrance. It works as an outdoor gallery, planted with native and drought-tolerant species and presenting a timeline of key moments from Sheikh Zayed’s life across desert, oasis and urban settings. Sunglasses and water are useful here, and the cooler months are the most comfortable time to walk it before heading into the air-conditioned galleries.
Highlights of the Zayed National Museum galleries
Inside, six permanent galleries guide you through the story of the UAE: the earliest human activity in the region, ancient trade networks, coastal and inland traditions, and the natural environments of desert, sea and mountains that shaped daily life over thousands of years. A dedicated focus on Sheikh Zayed brings his vision and values to life, and first visitors described hearing his voice as one of the most moving moments.
A few objects stand out:
- The Abu Dhabi Pearl, one of the oldest natural pearls in the world, which sheds new light on the history of pearling in the Arabian Gulf.
- The Blue Quran, a celebrated masterpiece of Islamic art and one of the finest manuscripts of its kind.
- The Magan Boat, a recreation developed by the museum with Zayed University and New York University Abu Dhabi, built with raw materials described on an ancient clay tablet and techniques dating back to around 2100 BCE.
Plan for two to three hours to enjoy the garden and galleries without rushing. The clear timeline makes complex history easy to follow, which helps students and families bring history lessons to life.
Who will get the most from a visit
Residents who want to understand their adopted home will find the long view fascinating: the story begins long before the founding of the nation, showing how people lived, traded and adapted to the land, and that context helps make sense of the modern UAE. Visitors new to the country get a strong introduction to its heritage in a single visit, and Emirati families can trace the journey their grandparents lived through. For regular visitors, the museum also offers annual memberships.
Planning your visit
The current ticket listing covers visits until 31 January 2027. Bring your ticket and a valid photo ID. As a national institution, modest and respectful clothing is a good choice, and light layers work well for moving between the outdoor garden and the galleries. Opening hours have varied since the museum opened, including extended evenings during Ramadan, so check the museum’s own website for the latest times before you go.
Saadiyat Island is a short drive from central Abu Dhabi, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are an easy option. The museum sits alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi in the Saadiyat Cultural District, so many visitors start at Zayed National Museum and continue to a neighbour in the afternoon. Allow extra time at weekends, when the district is busier.
